Bring Your Own Device [BYOD] Prepare for the New Device Game

Highway Signpost "BYOD - Bring Your Own Device"

A game-changing growth opportunity within the IT industry is under way, requiring a host of new, and necessary skill sets. BYOD, a movement that is setting the tone for a world in which there are no more company-issued laptops/tablets/smartphones, is promising to change the cultural landscape as we now know it, and gaining momentum daily. BYOD, or Bring Your Own Device, poses a unique set of issues for companies wanting to remain in the game.

The recent report from Gartner is predicting that, with 70 percent of companies adopting it by 2017, BYOD is looking all but certain. It’s true that BYOD can provide cost efficiencies for corporations, with employees paying for their own hardware, but, at the same time, the IT industry must be prepared to address the Pandora’s box that, once opened, cannot be closed.

BYOD is more than meets the IT eye. It is important for industry and IT experts to understand the full impact of this trend. There is a trade-off for both corporations and IT professionals alike. Money will be saved from purchasing hardware that becomes obsolete before the final check is sent, however, there is, and will continue to be, a direct financial impact to IT departments—increased spend for new security measures, policy making and training, as well as the costs associated with learning curves within IT departments. IT needs to be prepared for ways to manage the fleet of user-owned devices accessing corporate networks:

  • Security management
  • The balancing act between personal and professional applications
  • Data plans
  • Access rights
  • Remote access management
  • Lost and stolen devices
  • Employee exit SOP etc.
  • Disarming the “landmines”

These new opportunities will continue to catapult the industry into the next level, removing hardware, disarming bombs….stage completed.

New Startups: Print your Instagram Photos and get Paid to Share Ads

Almost everyday a new and interesting startup makes it debut.  Many of them are useful, but it is so hard to track them down being that there are so many startups.  This morning I came across two new startups that were worth putting in your radar.  Take a look at them and judge for yourself whether or not they fit into your social networking world.

Snapstagram

I always have a strong desire to print and frame my Instagram pictures.  Looking across Instagram, I see a lot of photos that have the potential to be printed, framed, and mounted on a wall somewhere.  Then I come across Snapstagram a startup that offers printing four-inch-by-four inch frames of your photos and mailing them to the place of your choice.

The startup is not the first to offer printing services for Instagram. However, the difference is the mailing experience and the anticipation that comes with receiving mail.  The startup is near its fundraising campaign of $3,000, so it will soon be available.  In that case you should start thinking about which pictures you would want to print and who to mail them to.

Wingsplay

Honestly, I was a little frustrated over the idea of companies capitalizing off of my Facebook page, or any social networking page of mine.  Maybe my frustration stemmed off of the fact that I wanted a piece of the pie as well.  Well, needless to say Wingsplay offers users a chance to get paid to share ads.

Users would share four video advertisements a week and get paid by cost per view.  The motive goes beyond money and offers users the option to start conversation through funny as well as interesting advertisements.   The idea fits well with the original purpose of social networks, which is sharing.  A win-win situation that allows users to get paid to share humorous advertisements.

iPhone Users Not Too Happy About Android Instagram Invasion

Alex Edghill

Instagram was always known as the social app exclusively for the iPhone.  An app where apple users were given the stage to play out their life stories and passions through pictures.  This was not a mere app for iPhone users, it was an exclusive community, which in the end made any iPhone user proud to be one.  It may have been one of the top plus’ to owning an iPhone until yesterday when Instagram opened up to Android users.

The overall outrage from iPhone users that went viral on Instagram was an entertaining site to see. There was no such thing as a warm welcome mat for the Android community. iPhone users feel as though their exclusive community has been invaded and the dynamics of Instagram will never be the same.  I just had to share some of the Instagram outrage with you all. Take a look at some of these post that went up yesterday, and feel free to share your thoughts…

Technology, Education, and the Future of Employment

Children are so easily distracted, but put something interesting in front of them and they’ll have your full attention.  I wouldn’t expect it to be any different in a classroom setting.  Thinking about it now, as a young student, my teacher would have the full attention of my class whenever it included computers.  Those lessons were most memorable and fun. So why are many people afraid of technology taking over the classroom setting?  The way I see it, this could transform the employment world.

I recently read that although IT and engineering are first to recover from unemployment, many Americans do not have the required skill sets for these positions. How do we begin to fill these positions or even make sure Americans have the appropriate skills needed? Well, the classroom is a good place to begin changing the scheme of things. It’s probably one of the best places to build interest and skills for technology.  So thank God for Mike Zamansky, a computer coding professor at Stuyvesant High School, who was behind the idea and creation of what will soon be NYC’s first software engineering specialized high school.

Most preparations are starting even with elementary students.  Is there anything wrong with the combination of an 8 year old and a tablet?  Not at all if you ask me.  Teachers are using these items, or the apps that come with them, to grasp student’s attention and create a fun, effective, and memorable learning experience. But beyond that, it’s also prepping a strong generation of technological leaders and innovators.  Why not inspire them while they’re young and help build interest, strong knowledge, and a possible career path in technology. What’s the worst that could happen, closing some gaps in employment in the near future?

Erick Schonfeld, writer for TechCrunch, says,

“I think technology can help lead the way by creating new jobs and redefining employment” Find article here

And needless to say he is absolutely right.  There are endless advantages and opportunities in technology.  So instead of fearing “gadgets” entering the classroom, we should focus on the “possibilities” that the “gadgets” can create.  So let the revolution of technology continue.

Consumer Electronics Show: Technology of 2012

The International Consumer Electronic Show is like living in the Jetsons’ cartoon.  C.E.S, which is put on every January in Las Vegas by the Consumer Electronics Association, is probably one of the greatest things that could happen to the technology industry.  Why would I say that? Well because who would want to turn down the opportunity to view all the latest technology and gadgets before they even hit the market.  So take a look at a few of the devices that made an appearance on C.E.S., read along, and feel free to comment about which gadgets peak your interest.

LG introduced an 84inch ”ultra definition” flat screen television that is equipped with features such as voice recognition, 3D gesture control, and Smart Share Plus along with Wi-Fi (being able to watch what’s on TV on your mobile device).  The television is also available in different sizes.

The PC reinvents itself and remains relevant with the Ultrabook.  It resembles the MacBook Air as it doesn’t have a slot for DVDs and hard disk drives. The Ultrabook’s features include: battery life longer than 8 hours, turns on instantly, Flash memory, and is outstandingly thinner than 0.8 inches.

Fitbit’s Wi-Fi Smart Scale will seemingly strengthen our ability to comfortably talk about weight. The ability to share your weight-loss journey from the scale onto the Fitbit website is available, and if you’re bold enough, you can do some sharing on Facebook as well. The scale, Aria, keeps track of weight, body fat percentage, and body mass index.

Karotz, which look exactly like rabbits, made its appearance through Violet, a UK, based company, at C.E.S. The internet connected bunnies have the ability to update Twitter and Facebook pages, send emails, and read texts.  The device is equipped with voice recognition as well as a built in webcam and microphone.
